Teaching Assistants - University of Technology, University of Da Nang
During our academic visit at University of Technology at University of Da Nang, we learned that one of the quality assurance concerns is the large student-faculty ratio. To alleviate his concern, the university seems to have adopted the US model of hiring teaching assistants, whom happen to be exemplar students/ upper classmen (in their 4-th or 5-th year). What was unclear is the teaching and training of these students to become teachers. We were not sure whether or not the colleagues in Vietnam are as aware about the growing criticism in USA about using TAs in undergraduate education of students. There appears to be a mandatory 6 month training for every novice faculty. In the US some parents are choosing schools where instruction is done only by faculty. I wonder how are the parents in Vietnam thinking about their kids being taught by TAs? Thus far we have yet to hear anything from our various meetings across Vietnam about the role that parents play in the education of their children.
